Per normal, it's not yet noon on January 1st, and I'm pretty sure if I had made any resolutions (which I didn't), they would already be broken! Yet I'm thinking about different things, this time around. I'm thinking about what it is to establish new habits, new rhythms, and new routines, and I feel confident that by the very nature of how these things are defined; we cannot determine whether or not the goal has been accomplished until time has passed (more time than twelve hours).
Isaiah 62:2, 4, 12 (parts) “You shall be
called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord… You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and
your land shall no more be termed Desolate;
but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her… and you shall be called, ‘Sought
Out…’” (NRSV).
Throughout Scripture,
there are narratives during which God gives new names… Abram becomes Abraham… Sarai becomes Sarah… Jacob becomes
Israel… Simon becomes Peter… Even in our own lives, we certainly have
stories we could share about nicknames and new names. It's a good day for new identities. How will we name and
be named in the coming year?
